Lawrence Powell

The emeritus holder of the James H. Clark Endowed Chair in American Civilization, Lawrence N. Powell taught history at Tulane University from 1978 until his retirement in June 2012. He was a co-founder of both the Louisiana Coalition Against Racism and Nazism and the Southern Institute for Education and Research and currently chairs the Louisiana State Museum Board.  He is the author of The Accidental City: Improvising New Orleans (Harvard, 2012) and Troubled Memory: Anne Levy, the Holocaust, and David Duke’s Louisiana (UNC, 2000). In 1999 he was named Louisiana Humanist of the Year.
