As Tikkun Olam teaches us, God intentionally created an imperfect world. In this interactive session, we will explore how Tikkun Olam plays out in post-Katrina New Orleans for us as three young professionals in the workforce, economic, and youth development/education fields, as well as in the lives of all New Orleanians. Through free writes, small group discussions, and reflections, we will consider the role of and appetite for community development in New Orleans, which can at times be resistant to change. For those of us who are not from New Orleans, Tikkun Olam was the reason for moving here. How can this value help us reconcile the often contentious “newcomer vs. native” conversation in New Orleans? Is Jewish community service for the Jewish community or wider community? We will end with a call to action, committing to our own acts of Tikkun Olam.
