Sanctuary is one of the most ancient traditions of people of faith that provides safe spaces against the threat of persecution. In 2007, an initiative known as the New Sanctuary Movement took shape with coalitions of congregations throughout the country pledging to support the work of immigration organizers and those facing deportation. This session will provide historical context for the contemporary sanctuary movement from an interfaith perspective; explore the history of local immigration organizing in the Greater New Orleans area; and will identify ways that congregations and individuals can participate in local efforts of the Greater New Orleans Interfaith Sanctuary coalition. The session will also include background on Jewish involvement in the Sanctuary movement.
